Privacy Policy

This page explains, as plainly as we can, what data ProvenáTrace collects when you use our app or website, why we collect it, and what rights you have over it. If anything here is unclear, email us — see Contact below.

What we collect

  • Your email address— used to create and sign you into your account. We don’t ask for your name, address, or any other personal details to use the app.
  • Barcodes you scan — needed to look up a product and show you its score.
  • Your scan history— the products you’ve scanned, kept so you can look back at them in the app.
  • Nutrition and packaging data you contribute — if you choose to correct or add nutrition values, packaging type, origin, or certifications for a product.
  • Label photos you take — nutrition label and front-of-pack photos, taken only when you choose to contribute data for a product.

We don’t collect your precise location, contacts, or anything else from your device beyond what’s listed above and what’s needed for the camera to work when you choose to scan or take a photo.

How we use it

We use this data to run the core features of the app: looking up products, calculating and showing scores, keeping your scan history, and letting you correct or add missing product data. We don’t use it to build an advertising profile of you, and we don’t sell it.

Contributions go to Open Food Facts

When you correct or add nutrition values, packaging details, or photos for a product, that contribution is submitted to Open Food Facts, the open, public food database ProvenáTrace is built on. This means your contribution becomes part of a public, open-licensed database that anyone can view, reuse, or build on — the same as if you’d contributed directly on their site or app. We submit it under ProvenáTrace’s own contributor account, not your personal identity, but the product data itself (values, photos) is public once submitted. We can’t retract or edit a contribution on Open Food Facts’ side on your behalf once it’s been accepted there — you’d need to contact Open Food Facts directly for that.

We do not sell your data

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data to third parties. Product and scoring data comes from and is shared with Open Food Facts and other public data sources described in our About page; that’s about the products, not about you.

How long we keep it

We keep your account and scan history for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we delete the personal data tied to it, other than anything already submitted to Open Food Facts as an open contribution (see above), which we can’t remove from a third party’s public database.

Your rights under UK GDPR

As a UK user, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Have inaccurate data corrected
  • Have your data erased
  • Restrict or object to how we process your data
  • Receive your data in a portable format
  • Withdraw consent at any time, where we rely on consent
  • Complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) if you think we’ve mishandled your data

To exercise any of these rights, email us — see Contact below. We’ll respond within one month, as required by law.
